A scissor lift raises people on a stable platform for vertical access. A Genie material lift raises materials — RSJs, ducting, plasterboard — using a manual winch and is not designed to lift personnel. Many sites use both: the Genie places the load, the scissor lift gives operators a stable position to fix it.

Platform height is the height the platform itself reaches. Working height includes a typical reach allowance — usually about 2m above the platform. So a 10m working-height class means the platform reaches roughly 8m and an operator can comfortably reach 10m. Always plan to the working height, not the platform height alone.
