Which Height Do You Need?

Match your job to the right scaffold tower — from indoor ceilings to multi-storey facades.

Scaffold tower height guide showing working heights for indoor, single-storey, two-storey, three-storey and commercial buildings

Platform height is where you stand. Working height adds roughly 2m of reach above it.

Which Scaffold Tower Do You Need?

Match the job to the tower. Platform height, site conditions, and crew size decide the right option.

Your Job Recommended Tower Platform Height Why
Indoor decorating, ceiling work 3T Single-Width Tower 4.2m Fits through standard doorways, one-person build, light and manoeuvrable
Quick setup, short-term jobs Folding Tower (MiTower) 4.2m Folds and unfolds in minutes. No loose components, one-person build
Solo work, compact site access Miniscaff Solo Tower Up to 2.5m Ultra-compact platform for tight spaces. One-person assembly, lightweight
Facade, signage, upper-storey render Industrial Single-Width Tower Up to 6.2m Narrow footprint for restricted sites. Stabilisers included at height, one-person build
Stairwells, split-level landings Stairwell Tower Adjustable Adjustable legs handle the step between landing and stair. Standard towers are not rated for uneven footings
Plastering, rendering, wide facade work Twin-Access / Double-Width Tower Up to 6.2m Wider deck gives room to work with materials. Two-person crew recommended
High-level multi-storey access Twin-Access Tower (12.2m) Up to 12.2m Maximum reach for multi-storey facade, render, and inspection work. Stabilisers essential

Three questions pick the right tower:

1. How high does the platform need to be?
Not "how high can I reach" — how high you actually need to stand. A 4m platform lets most adults work a 6m ceiling. A 10m platform is for facades, signage, and upper-storey render.

2. Where is it going?
Through a doorway? Up a staircase? On an uneven driveway? The site decides the tower type more than the height does.

3. Who is building it?
Solo builds need lighter sections and through-trapdoor access. Two-person crews can go taller faster and handle wider decks.

Single-Width vs Double-Width Towers

Choosing between a narrow or wide tower? Here is the practical comparison.

Feature Single-Width Double-Width
Deck width 0.85m 1.35 – 1.45m
Fits through standard doors Yes No
Room for materials on platform Limited Yes
One-person build Yes Two-person recommended
Best for Indoor, decorating, solo Rendering, plastering, wide facade
Max platform height 6.2m 12.2m

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between platform height and working height?

Platform height is where your feet stand. Working height is roughly 2m more — the average reach above the platform. If you need to work on a 5m ceiling, you want a platform around 3m, not a tower with "5m working height" written on it.

Do I need PASMA or IPAF training to hire one?

Legally you need to be trained to build and use a mobile scaffold tower at work — PASMA is the recognised standard in the UK. We do not require you to show a card on hire, but HSE requirements still apply to you as the user. If the work is at home and you are confident, read the build manual supplied with the tower.

How much space do I need to build one?

A single-width tower needs a working footprint of roughly 1.4m x 1.9m plus room for stabilisers. Double-width is around 1.8m x 2m. Stabilisers extend 0.6 to 1m beyond the tower on each side at taller heights.

What is included in the hire?

The tower, guardrails, toeboards, stabilisers (where required by height), and the build manual. We do not supply PPE, harnesses, or edge-protection beyond what comes with the tower. Wheels are fitted on mobile configurations.

Can I use a scaffold tower in a stairwell?

Yes — but only the Stairwell Tower. Its adjustable legs handle the step between the landing and the stair. Standard towers are not rated for uneven footings.

How quickly can I get a scaffold tower delivered?

Most orders placed before midday qualify for next-day delivery across all London boroughs. For urgent same-day requirements, call 020 3375 4048 and we will check availability.
