Which pressure washer do you need?
For most exterior cleaning jobs in London — patios, driveways, paving, brickwork, render and site clean-up — a cold water pressure washer is usually the right choice where the surface allows wet cleaning. Hireload’s cold water pressure washer hire covers domestic and trade jobs across London. Tell us the surface and site setup before booking — we can advise what is suitable. For heavy oil or grease jobs (kitchen extraction, garage forecourts), a hot water unit is more suitable. If you’re unsure, call 020 3375 4048.

Best for these jobs
Common situations where cold water pressure washer hire is the simplest, most practical choice.
-
Patio pressure washer hire
Slab patios, block paving and stone paths where the surface and pointing are suitable for wet cleaning.
-
Driveway pressure washer hire
Concrete, tarmac and block-paved driveways — plan run-off and check for loose blocks before starting.
-
Commercial pressure washer hire
Construction site wash-down, loading bays, trade clean-up where site water and power are available.
-
Exterior surfaces
Brickwork, render and cladding where the surface is sound — test a small area first and keep the lance at distance.
-
Domestic & trade hire
Suitable for homeowners, landlords, end-of-tenancy cleans and trade contractors across London.
Not ideal for these jobs
Use a different setup or call us first if your job sits in any of these categories.
- Heavy grease and oil — kitchen extraction, garage forecourts and food processing usually need a hot water unit.
- Soft, aged or delicate stonework — soft sandstone, weathered limestone and lime mortar can be damaged by close-range cleaning.
- Painted timber and old render — paint, single-ply render and aged coatings can be lifted or driven into the substrate.
- Indoor finished rooms — pressure washers produce a high volume of water; not suitable inside finished spaces.
- Sites without a water supply — pressure washers need a water source on site.
- Sites without mains power access — confirm power access before booking.
Surface suitability — quick guide
Pressure washers are powerful tools. The right surface, the right distance and a small test patch make all the difference.
| Surface | Usually suitable? | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete & tarmac driveways | Yes, where in good order | Watch for loose joints and run-off direction |
| Slab & block paving | Yes, where pointing is sound | Re-sand joints after cleaning if washed out |
| Modern brickwork | Often yes, with care | Keep distance; avoid soft or old mortar |
| Modern render | Sometimes — case by case | Avoid single-ply, painted or aged render |
| Hardwood & treated decking | With care | Test small area; expect some fibre raise |
| Soft stone & lime mortar | Usually no | High pressure can erode the surface |
| Painted wood & coated surfaces | Usually no | Paint and coatings can lift or fail |
| Glass & delicate trim | No close range | Hand-clean or low-pressure approach |
Always test a small, hidden area first. If you’re unsure, call 020 3375 4048 and we’ll help you decide before you book.
The water connection — read this before you book
The single most important thing about hiring this machine: it needs a proper water feed, and the feed side is yours. Here is exactly who brings what.
The machine, ready to work
- The pressure washer itself — checked, tested and running before it leaves us
- The high-pressure hose, trigger gun and lance
- A handover walkthrough: we show you the controls, the purge routine and what a good water connection looks like
The water feed
- A garden hose and a working outside tap — the hose is the water feed, and it is not included with the hire
- The connection hardware: the inlet is a 1980s screw-collar stub — not a modern click-on connector. Bring a standard hose clip (jubilee clip, from any DIY shop) to secure your hose to it — the clip and any tap-end fitting are yours to arrange too
- A tap opened all the way — the pump draws up to 11 litres a minute and must never be starved or run dry
Water, drainage & power — site checklist
Have these answers ready and we’ll help match you to the right hire faster.
- Water supply on site (check water and power access before booking)
- Mains power on site (confirm there is a socket within reach of where you’ll be working)
- Drainage and run-off plan (where the dirty water will go and what it carries)
- Surface check (condition, pointing, paint, coatings, age of mortar)
- Test patch on a hidden area (before cleaning the full surface)
- PPE for the operator (eye protection, sturdy footwear, suitable clothing)
- Neighbouring property care (overspray, debris, parked cars, planters, pets)
- Access and storage plan (indoor overnight storage if hired multi-day)
- Collection or delivery booking (Greenford UB6 collection or London delivery by booking)

Cold water vs hot water pressure washer — which do I need?
A common question. Cold water suits most exterior cleaning jobs. A specialist or hot water setup may be more suitable for grease, oil or stubborn deposits.
| Job type | Cold water pressure washer | Hot water pressure washer |
|---|---|---|
| Patios, paving, driveways | Usually the right choice | Not normally needed |
| Brickwork, render, exterior walls | Often suitable, with care | Sometimes used for stubborn staining |
| Decking, paths, garden surfaces | Commonly used (test first) | Not normally needed |
| Construction site clean-up | Usually fits the job | Used where heavy grease is involved |
| Plant & equipment wash-down | Suits general muck and dirt | Better for grease-heavy machinery |
| Kitchen extraction cleaning | Not typically suitable | Hot water is the usual choice |
| Garage forecourts & oil staining | Limited results | Hot water is usually more effective |
| Food processing & commercial kitchens | Not typically suitable | A specialist hot water or detergent-compatible setup may be needed. |

Pressure washer vs garden hose vs domestic machine
A frequent question from homeowners and landlords planning an exterior clean.
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 🚿 Garden hose only | Light rinsing, watering plants, dust | Limited cleaning power on caked dirt |
| 🛒 Cheap consumer machine | Occasional small driveway or car cleaning | Slower on larger areas; not built for long runs |
| 💧 Cold water pressure washer hire (this product) | One-off or repeat exterior cleaning across patios, drives, paving, brickwork, render and trade jobs | Needs water supply, power access and run-off plan |
| 🔥 Hot water pressure washer hire | Heavy grease, oil, kitchen extraction, garage forecourts | More setup; usually more cost; not always needed |

Cold water pressure washer hire London — FAQs
Can I hire a pressure washer in London?
Yes — Hireload offers cold water pressure washer hire across London, with collection from Greenford UB6 by booking, or London delivery by booking. It suits patio and driveway cleaning, paving, brickwork, exterior surfaces and site clean-up where the surface allows wet cleaning.
Is this a cold water pressure washer?
Yes. Hireload’s pressure washer hire is a cold water unit suited to most exterior cleaning jobs. For heavy grease, oil or stubborn organic deposits — kitchen extraction, garage forecourts — a hot water unit is more suitable. If you’re unsure, call 020 3375 4048 and tell us about the job.
Is this an electric pressure washer?
Yes — this is electric pressure washer hire that runs on a standard mains power supply. Confirm there is a power socket within reach of where you’ll be working before booking. We can advise what is suitable for your site setup.
Do I need a tap or water supply?
Yes — pressure washers need a water supply on site. Check water and power access before booking. If you’re unsure how to plan the water source, call 020 3375 4048 and we can advise before you hire.
Do I need power access?
Yes — confirm there is mains power within cable reach of where you’ll be working. Tell us the surface and site setup before booking and we’ll help you check what is suitable.
Can I use it without mains water?
No — pressure washers need a water supply on site. There is no built-in water source on the hire. If your site has no water access, call 020 3375 4048 and tell us the situation — we can advise on alternatives.
Can I use it on patios and driveways?
Yes — patios, paving and driveways are common pressure washer hire jobs, where the surface and pointing are sound. Plan your run-off, check for loose blocks or sand joints, and re-sand joints after cleaning if they have washed out. Accessories or setup options may vary by booking — ask when you order.
Can I use it on decking?
With care, yes — hardwood and treated softwood decking can be cleaned with a pressure washer where the timber is in good condition. Test a small, hidden area first, keep the lance at a sensible distance and expect some fibre raising. Avoid old, soft or split decking and always work along the grain.
Can I use it on brickwork, render or cladding?
Often yes for sound, modern brickwork, render and cladding — but with care. Avoid soft or aged mortar, single-ply render, painted surfaces and aged coatings, which can be damaged by close-range cleaning. When in doubt, test a hidden area first or call 020 3375 4048 to talk through the surface before booking.
Is cold water enough for oil or grease?
For light dirt, mud and exterior grime, cold water usually works fine. For heavy oil or grease — kitchen extraction cleaning, garage forecourts, food processing — a hot water pressure washer is more suitable. Tell us the surface and site setup before booking so we can advise.
Can I collect from Greenford UB6?
Yes. Pressure washer collection at Greenford UB6 is available by booking and is a convenient option for short hires across West London. The hire is a wheeled unit, so plan for boot space and any stairs at your end.
Do you deliver pressure washers in London?
Yes — London delivery by booking is available, with scheduled slots. Order ahead where possible. Email info@hireload.co.uk with your postcode and dates for a delivery quote.
Will it damage my patio or driveway?
Modern, well-laid surfaces in good condition usually handle pressure washing fine — but pressure washers can wash out joint sand on block paving, and can damage soft mortar, aged pointing and delicate stonework. Always test a small area first, keep the lance at a sensible distance, and re-sand joints after cleaning where needed.
How long does it take to pressure wash a driveway?
Time depends on size, surface, soiling and the operator. A typical domestic driveway can take from a couple of hours to a full day. For larger areas or commercial jobs, plan for multi-day hire and budget time for drying afterwards.
What should I check before using a pressure washer?
Confirm the surface can be wet cleaned, test a small hidden area first, check pointing and joints on paving, plan your drainage and run-off, keep clear of windows, planters, parked cars and pets, and wear suitable PPE. Keep the lance at a sensible distance from the surface and from people.
What equipment helps with clean-up after pressure washing?
For drying paths, paving and outdoor areas faster, an air mover can help. For damp inside spaces near the work, consider a dehumidifier. For wet floor recovery, a wet & dry vacuum can help lift water from suitable hard surfaces.
Do you supply the water hose and tap connector?
We supply the pressure washer, high-pressure hose, trigger gun and lance. The water feed side — a garden hose and a working tap — is yours to arrange. The inlet on this machine is a screw-collar fitting from its 1980s commercial design, not a modern click-on connector — you also need a standard hose clip (jubilee clip) or suitable fitting to hold your hose on it, and that hardware is yours to arrange. Not sure what to bring? WhatsApp us a photo of your tap and hose before delivery and we will tell you exactly.
Can it draw water from a water butt or tank?
Only if the tank sits clearly higher than the machine so water flows to it by gravity. The pump is not designed to lift water upwards, and it must never run dry — a mains outside tap with a garden hose is the reliable setup for this machine.
Why does the motor keep running after I release the trigger?
By design. This is a commercial unit with no auto-stop: when you release the trigger the pump keeps running and recirculates the same water inside, which slowly heats it. Fine for well under a minute — for any longer pause, switch off at the machine. The full 2-minute usage guide further up this page covers it.

Using Your Pressure Washer: The 2-Minute Guide
Your machine: KEW 1702K · Danish-built commercial cold water pressure washer · 100 bar working pressure · 11 litres a minute · standard 230V plug · no auto-stop
READ THIS FIRST
Two habits keep this machine alive
1. Water before power. Tap fully on and the air purged through before the motor ever starts — a pressure washer pump running dry destroys itself in minutes.
2. Switch off when you put the gun down. Releasing the trigger does not stop this machine — it is a 1980s commercial unit with no auto-stop. The pump keeps running and reheats the same trapped water; more than a minute or two of that wears the seals. Red knob off, every pause.

Something not right? Start here
Written the way people actually describe it. Each fix takes about a minute.
Nothing is wrong — this machine has no auto-stop. But left idling, the pump reheats the same trapped water and the seals suffer after a minute or two.THE FIX
Switch off at the red knob whenever the gun is down. That single habit is most of what keeps this machine healthy.
Air trapped in the pump — happens on almost every first start of the day.THE FIX
Machine OFF, tap fully on, squeeze the trigger until the water runs smooth and solid with no spitting — then switch on and try again.
The pump is not getting a full feed: tap not fully open, hose kinked or still coiled, or grit in the nozzle.THE FIX
Open the tap all the way, straighten and uncoil the hose, re-purge the air. Still surging? Stop and WhatsApp us a video.
Thermal protection has tripped — usually a long or thin extension lead, or too long idling in bypass.THE FIX
Switch off, plug it directly into a socket, give it 15–20 minutes to cool, then restart. It is protecting itself, not broken.
The pump is being starved of water — this is the warning sound.THE FIX
Stop straight away. Fix the feed: tap fully open, kinks out, hose uncoiled. Running it starved is the one thing that causes real damage.
A few drips after shutdown are normal. A steady leak while running is a seal or coupling problem.THE FIX
Check your hose connection at the inlet first. If the leak is from the machine itself, stop and send us a photo on WhatsApp — do not keep running it.
This is a full 13-amp machine — thin extension leads and shared circuits cannot feed it.THE FIX
Plug directly into a socket with nothing else heavy on the circuit. If you must extend: 2.5mm² lead, fully unwound.
