What a drum floor sander does
A drum floor sander is the machine that does the heavy lifting on a floor refurbishment. Its 200 mm (8-inch) drum carries the sandpaper across the open floor, taking off old finish, paint, staining and unevenness pass by pass, and leaving the timber flat and ready to seal. It is the right tool for solid floorboards, parquet and block or herringbone wood floors. The last few inches against the skirting, the corners and any bays are out of the drum’s reach by design — that is the edging sander’s job.
What you can and can’t sand with it
A drum sander is made for solid wood. On thin surface layers it can cut straight through, so check the floor first.
Solid floorboards — pine, oak and other solid timber boards.
Parquet & block wood — herringbone and block floors of solid wood.
Engineered wood — only if the wear layer is thick enough to sand. Ask the desk if unsure.
Laminate & vinyl — these are not solid wood and cannot be sanded back.
Drum, edger, or both?
Most full-floor jobs need both. Here’s how to decide.
Getting a clean finish
Start with a coarse grit to take the old finish off, then work up through medium and fine grades for a surface that’s ready to seal. Keep the drum moving at all times — a drum sander left sitting in one spot will dig in. Sand with the grain where you can, and vac between grades so grit from the last pass doesn’t scratch the next. Finish the edges and corners with an edging sander, matching the same grit grades so the whole floor blends.

Floor sander hire — common questions
What floors can I use a drum sander on?
Solid timber boards, parquet and block or herringbone wood. Avoid it on laminate, vinyl or thin engineered floors — the drum can cut through the surface layer.
Do I also need an edging sander?
For a full room, yes. The drum physically can’t reach the edges, corners and stairs. Most people take the pack so the whole floor matches.
Will it run off a normal mains socket?
Yes — it runs on 230V standard mains, the normal domestic supply. No transformer needed.
How much sandpaper will I need?
It depends on the floor size and how heavy the old coating is. Tell the hire desk your room size and we’ll advise on grit grades and quantities when you book.
How does the hire pricing work?
One-day, two-day and seven-day rates, with a reduced day-rate on longer hires. Message the hire desk before your collection date if you need to extend.
