Had a quote that includes hundreds of pounds for scaffolding? For a lot of two-storey roofline jobs you may not need a full scaffold at all — a mobile tower does it for far less. Here’s how to tell which your job genuinely needs.

The quick answer
For most standard two-storey fascia, soffit and guttering jobs, a mobile scaffold tower is enough — you access the roofline in sections. Full scaffolding is genuinely worth it when the run is very high, the ground is uneven or obstructed, the whole perimeter is being done at once, or the job runs for days with several trades. A tower can save you the scaffolding line on the quote — but never cut corners on safety.
What the Job Actually Involves
Replacing fascias, soffits and guttering means working along the roofline with both hands and a run of materials — boards, brackets, lengths of gutter. That rules a ladder out for the bulk of the work: you need a stable platform you can stand on and move along the eaves. The real question isn’t ladder-versus-tower, it’s tower-versus-full-scaffold. Our ladder, tower or scaffold guide sets out the wider decision.
Tower or Full Scaffolding? How to Decide
| Your situation | Usually enough |
|---|---|
| Standard two-storey semi or terrace, accessible elevation, section-by-section work | Mobile scaffold tower |
| One or two elevations, firm level ground, DIY or a single fitter | Mobile scaffold tower |
| Whole perimeter done at once, several trades, days of work | Full scaffolding |
| Very high, three-storey, or a steep/obstructed elevation | Full scaffolding |
| Uneven or sloping ground a tower can’t stand safely on | Full scaffolding (or an adjustable-leg tower for the ground issue) |
A 3T tower suits most standard roofline work; a Twin-Access double-width tower gives two fitters room and reaches higher, and an Industrial single-width squeezes into a tight side return.
Honest note: Hireload hires mobile towers, not erected scaffolding. If your roofline job genuinely needs a full scaffold, use a scaffolding contractor — we’d rather say so than talk you into a tower that doesn’t suit the work. For a standard two-storey run, though, a tower is usually all it takes.
What It Means for the Cost
This is where the decision shows up on the invoice. Tower hire starts from around £42 a week. Erecting scaffolding around a two-storey elevation typically runs from several hundred pounds into the low thousands depending on the size and access, plus a booking lead time — and a council licence if it stands on a public pavement. On a job a tower can safely handle, that scaffolding line is money you may not need to spend. On a job that genuinely needs a scaffold, it’s money well spent. What Do the Trades Actually Use?
Plenty of roofline installers turn up to a standard semi or terrace with a mobile tower rather than booking a scaffold — it’s quicker, cheaper and moves with the work. Ask your installer what’s included in the quote and why; if scaffolding is on there, it’s fair to ask whether a tower would do. For unusual or high elevations, a good installer will explain why a scaffold is the safe call.
The Right Tower for Roofline Work
Before You Book
Towers are hired by the week, with a £100 refundable deposit and photo ID required on every hire, and come with guardrails, toeboards, stabilisers and the build manual. A roofline replacement is often a one to two week hire depending on the size of the house. We deliver from our Greenford (UB6) depot.
Who This Helps
- Homeowners who’ve been quoted for scaffolding and want to sense-check it
- Roofline and guttering fitters who prefer movable access
